A Denmark-based global engineering consulting group, Cowi, was awarded a contract by Thistle Wind Partners to conduct a front-end engineering design (pre-FEED) study for two offshore wind farms.

Cowi will do the preliminary work – including foundation design, integration of electrical and civil elements, and feasibility – for the project that is expected to start construction in 2029.

Once completed, the wind farms, named Ayre and Bowdun, are expected to produce 2GW (combined) of energy from 2032 to 2033.

“Both projects were allocated as part of the ScotWind leasing round in 2022 and, when complete, will play a key role in supporting Scotland and the wider UK’s net-zero targets,” said Cowi.

“The Ayre project, located to the east of Orkney, is a 1GW floating-foundation offshore wind farm, whilst Bowdun is a 1GW fixed wind project and is situated off the coast of Aberdeenshire.”

The engineering firm will also offer road and railway design support for onshore cable routing and associated crossings.

No financial details on the contract were made public.
